The Heating Makeover

Here is our much delayed post on our heating switch. We quickly realised that the existing system was not going to cut it. We had an archaic 30 year old boiler, a badly insulated hot water cylinder and a water tank that wasn’t nearly high up enough to give good pressure. On top of that we had sludge filled radiators that barely worked and a kitchen that sucked out what small output they had. Something had to change.

So we shopped around a bit and booked in some heating engineers to replace all the radiators, pull out the tank and cylinder and put in a proper modern condensing combi boiler. Let me tell you, this is not a cheap endeavour.

We were told it should take Monday to Wednesday, so we booked the three days off work and got ready for a mess. And a mess they did make!

As you can see, things didn’t look great before this all started. Then things kicked off.

This was all day one, and we were without any heating at all until Thursday. Turned out they underestimated how much of a horrible mess the existing system was and needed an extra day.

Like everything in this house, things weren’t exactly installed correctly previously. It took them much of day one to work out wherfe pipes went and what they did. One of the consequences was torrents of water pouring out when they took the boiler off the wall!

And that was it. We had heating again. Now it was a little more complicated actually being there, and we spent most of the time huddled in the kitchen next to a small electric heater, wrapped in layers. But now it is worth it!

We also had to go into town to use the toilet during the day, as they had to switch off the water! They made the most almighty mess and our house was a bombsite for the week.

Note to self, do the carpets last…
