After we had the heating upgraded, we had dreams of finishing off the downstairs. We decided to return to removing wallpaper in the kitchen in the hope that the other walls wouldn’t prove as difficult as the first one. We picked the radiator wall to start with by the dining room table as some of the wallpaper had already been stripped back when the radiator was replaced.
Ben and I weren’t keen on how all the light switches in the house are supplied power through trunking. So we planned to bury the cables in the wall.

After the heating was done we finally got around to sorting out our upstairs doors. They all needed planing to actually fit back into their frames (most of them had never fit even before the new carpets were put in, honestly what was wrong with the previous people?? This took maybe half an hour to fix per door), but we hadn’t had the heart to tackle it yet.

Our mess clearing coincided with the clearing of the rest of the mess from moving. The outhouse was totally full of rubbish, parts of a bed, piles of bits of wardrobe, all sorts.

We had an archaic 30 year old boiler, a badly insulated hot water cylinder and a water tank that wasn’t nearly high up enough to give good pressure. On top of that we had sludge filled radiators that barely worked and a kitchen that sucked out what small output they had. Something had to change.
Continue reading The Heating MakeoverThe outside temperature has increased, and with it, the kitchen. It is getting up to around 15 all on its own during the day! Working upstairs also helps, though the kettle feels a long way away.
The day had arrived, and we would soon have new floors. But first, moving everything downstairs, Greggs breakfast and screwing down the floorboards.
On the landing, all the wood was painted brown. The skirting, the doors and frames, the banister, the attic hatch and the cupboard, all a sort of pucey brown colour. Now, bearing in mind this is the darkest room in the house, this seemed counter intuitive to us.
In the living room we were left with a tingly dangly chandelier. It got in the way of everything. So, we bought a new light pendant for £1.50 and took it down. It was then that I discovered that the wiring for lights was significantly more complicated than I thought…
