Operation Bright – Freshening Up the Landing

On the landing, all the wood was painted brown. The skirting, the doors and frames, the banister, the attic hatch and the cupboard, all a sort of pucey brown colour. Now, bearing in mind this is the darkest room in the house, this seemed counter intuitive to us.

Even the blind was brown
IT’S SO BROWN

We needed to tackle this before we had the carpets fitted. So, out came the sandpaper and the white spirit to prep the surfaces for paint. This also seemed like a good time to start ripping up carpets so we could get all the way down the skirting boards, and also save the fitters ripping up the old ones.

We selected a dulux paint for the trimmings called Linnet White. We meant to get linen white, but made a mistake at the counter. Close enough, we’re happy with what we got.

We painted everything in two coats Sunday and Monday before the carpet fitters came on Tuesday.

We also decided to pull up the scratched and ill fitting laminate in the hallway since we needed to paint there as well. Underneath we found some quite nice but sadly cracked and bowed old tiles.

The tiles post cleanup, pre painting.

I did my best to stabilise the tiles before the new vinyl went down by sticking all the cracked and loose tiles down with the only thing I had available. Expanding foam.

All the cracked bits and pieces. Almost all the nearest row were also loose and needed sticking down.

The only problem area left was the corner where the water main came in. We pulled out as much of the loose rubble as possible and flattened it off (and filled the now hole….) with more foam, and cut it flatish.
